Spring Training in Clearwater, Fla., will once again have a somewhat nostalgic feel for Phillies fans.
On Tuesday, manager Charlie Manuel announced via news release that two notable ex-Phillies, Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt and former All-Star second baseman Mickey Morandini, will return as guest instructors this spring.
Manuel's field staff for the 2010 season will remain the same, with Pete Mackanin (bench), Rich Dubee (pitching), Milt Thompson (hitting), Sam Perlozzo (third base/infield), Davey Lopes (first base/outfield), Mick Billmeyer (bullpen/catching) and bullpen catcher Jesus Tiamo.
The 60-year-old Schmidt, a three-time National League Most Valuable Player who spent his entire 18-year career with the Phillies, will be serving as guest instructor for his ninth spring.
Morandini, 43, was selected to the 1995 NL All-Star team and played nine of his 11 big league seasons in Philadelphia. He will be making his second appearance as a guest instructor for the Phillies.
The Phillies' Spring Training coaching staff will consist of 21 instructors, including Manuel, the Major League coaching staff, Minor League coordinators, the Triple-A coaching staff and two Minor League instructors.
Heading to Spring Training from the player-development staff will be coordinators Mike Compton (field), Gorman Heimueller (pitching), Steve Henderson (outfield/baserunning), Doug Mansolino (infield), Sal Rende (hitting) and Ernie Whitt (catching). The Triple-A staff will consist of Dave Huppert (manager), Greg Gross (hitting) and Rod Nichols (pitching). Rookie Gulf Coast League manager Roly de Armas and rehab pitching coach Carlos Arroyo will also be on hand.
