NAPA, Calif. -- Among the reliable signs of the approach of baseball season is the Giants' yearly Napa Golf Outing, which was held on Monday at the Napa Valley Country Club.
The 77 participants in the 11th annual event included nine former Giants: Ed Bressoud, Don Carrithers, Mike "Tiny" Felder, Dave Kingman, Darren Lewis, Rich Murray, Robb Nen, Nate Oliver and Rich Robertson. Bench coach Ron Wotus and broadcaster Dave Flemming also participated.
Bressoud, the senior Giants alumnus and a member of the 1958 team that brought Major League baseball to San Francisco, helped his foursome record the low score under a modified scramble format. Wotus' foursome finished second, and Kingman, who played nine holes with two groups, earned the distinction of ushering both to a third-place tie with a third foursome.
Most important, approximately $20,000 was raised through a silent auction for the Giants Community Fund, which uses baseball as a forum to encourage youngsters and families to live healthy, productive lives.
Flemming observed that the outing's many repeat participants "really do care about the Giants Community Fund, and I think everybody knows what a great charity that is. You get a group of people here who love the Giants but [also] love doing something for those kids. This is an event that has been successful for a long time, and there's a reason. There are a lot of people who care about helping the kids."
After the event, golfers dined at the Compadres Rio Grille, courtesy of owner Rick Enos, formerly chairman of the board of the Giants Community Fund.
"He definitely has us in his heart, and we're so grateful," said Sue Petersen, executive director of the Giants Community Fund.
