NEW YORK -- In a move to add yet more depth to their bench, the Mets announced Saturday that they have signed Long Island native Frank Catalanotto to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
Catalanotto, 35, hit .278 with one home run in 144 at-bats last year for the Brewers, playing second base and both corner outfield spots. He also has experience playing both first and third base during a 13-year career with the Tigers, Rangers, Blue Jays and Brewers.
Catalanotto is a .292 lifetime hitter, batting as high as .330 during his career-year of 2001.
Born in Smithtown, N.Y., Catalanotto graduated from East High School in Smithtown and attended C.W. Post.
He'll battle infielders Anderson Hernandez and Shawn Bowman, as well as a slew of young outfielders, for a reserve spot on the club. Already secure on the bench are Alex Cora, Angel Pagan, Gary Matthews Jr. and the recently re-signed Fernando Tatis.
